Windows 98 on XP
- Create a FAT32 partition where 98 will end up.
- Copy all the CAB files from the win98 dir on the installation disc to d:windowsoptionscabs.
- Use PartitionMagic to create a FAT partition before the XP partition.
- Boot to DOS on a floppy.
- Run fdisk and make the FAT partition active.
- Run Windows 98 setup from where everything was copied to.
- Boot in to 98.
- Reboot in to 98.
- Start to install XP from the XP setup disk.
- When setup reboots, boot in to 98.
- Edit boot.ini on the FAT partition to point to the correct locations; something like this:
- C:=“Windows 98”
- multidisk(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)windows=“Windows XP”
- Boot to DOS on a floppy.
- Run ptedit and change the now hidden NTFS partition’s type from 17 (hidden NTFS) to 07 (not hidden NTFS).
- Go home and try to remember everything you did so you can write it down for posterity.
