Windows 98 on XP

  1. Create a FAT32 partition where 98 will end up.
  2. Copy all the CAB files from the win98 dir on the installation disc to d:windowsoptionscabs.
  3. Use PartitionMagic to create a FAT partition before the XP partition.
  4. Boot to DOS on a floppy.
  5. Run fdisk and make the FAT partition active.
  6. Run Windows 98 setup from where everything was copied to.
  7. Boot in to 98.
  8. Reboot in to 98.
  9. Start to install XP from the XP setup disk.
  10. When setup reboots, boot in to 98.
  11. Edit boot.ini on the FAT partition to point to the correct locations; something like this:
    • C:=“Windows 98”
    • multidisk(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)windows=“Windows XP”
  12. Boot to DOS on a floppy.
  13. Run ptedit and change the now hidden NTFS partition’s type from 17 (hidden NTFS) to 07 (not hidden NTFS).
  14. Go home and try to remember everything you did so you can write it down for posterity.
